While wandering the nursery yesterday, I came across flowering Kale, a plant I have never bothered with before.
Winter is always such a long time for a gardener, and having something of interest to blog about is sometimes difficult. I am on the lookout for winter plants, Kale being the first I have found. Next season I plan on planting grasses for winter interest in the garden, and great photo opportunities as they are bedecked with raindrops or snow.
There were several different shades and leaf texture of Kale, but the one which I knew would look great in the newly painted pots was one named 'Coral Queen' The one Kale would have looked kinda' lonely all by itself in the pot, so of course, I had to find something to fill in around the Kale. I settled on Viola "Sorbet' and I think the colors of the two kinds of plants will compliment each other.

I think you will love that Kale. One year I had those, until the deer found them tasty.

Hi Jennifer! I planted cale for the first time last fall hoping to enjoy it during winter. But the winter was so wet and cold, all my Kale got rotten! Hope, this winter won't be so ugly.
Hi Jennifer~~ You know, ornamental grasses work great in containers. Maybe a chocolate colored Carex to add a harmonizing color and contrasting texture? ... Just a thought. I do love your choices. Kale is beautiful but I've never grown it.
Great minds think alike. I put together a winter container ensemble yesterday. Heucherella, Hebe, Loropetalum and trailing wire vine. I'll be posting a photo soon. ... Love your newly painted pots! A great photo-op any time of the year!
the grasses would look good ...remind you of nz perhaps :O)And as Grace has noted about hebes you could keep the nz theme going :O)

I'm curious to see how your kales turn out. I just had one that I bought as a plant last year, and enjoyed it in a pot. I haven't even thought that far ahead yet. I'm trying to hold onto summer as long as I can. The days keep getting shorter and shorter, though.
i am loving the size and color of those pots. I think the colors will contrast nicely with the blue.
I may try some kale as well. I just need to figure out how to make it look less like a tonights dinner in a pot. It would be great to have some fall/winter interest. I do love the ornamental grasses for this reason. They're such a great foil for other flowering plants and I love the plumes that just blow in the wind for months. This fall, I'm expecting a pink muhly grass that I hope will be a nice background in my little perennial garden.
