We have this PVC frame lying around the yard, surplus from another project. I have been thinking about building a cold frame for quite a while, and when I came across the frame, I wondered if it could be utilized as a cold frame.If so, the big question is how to attach a heavy duty plastic to the PVC. Anyone have some ideas, or am I biting off more than I can chew?

That is a good one. Maybe get another PVC pipe or some kind of flexible pipe the same size or a tad bigger that can be cut and slid over this frame so as to hold the plastic like a sleeve? Don't know really. You wouldn't want to rely only on cable ties as the plastic might rip but some cable ties might help too. I think a coldframe with this is a good idea.

I love it when something can be repurposed in the garden to extend the growing season. I am with Tina, I haven't actually done it but I know people who have. They swear it works like a dream. Good luck and let us know!

It wont look pretty... but how about bits of heavy duty plastic sheeting cut to fit each window (with an overlap).. and sticking them in place with gaffer tape?

Hi Keewee, there are a lot of ideas for securing the pvc out on the net. 4 to 8 inch lengths of black polly pipe with a slit on one side fitted over the pvc; see photo example at:

I would put some type of strapping across the frame to lesson the stress on the clamps.

Wow! ALooks like a great cold frame! I wish I had stuff like that "hanging" around. YOu can use something called snap clamps, the fit around the pvc pipes. They are mase specifically for the purpose. Here's a link. Google shopping snap clamps
When I did this a few years back...we used the plastic clamps that you use to hold wood together when glue is drying...we got several and they did the job...just make sure that they are on tight...or they spring off and disappear!

oh...if you are in a cold area like I am...I used a ceramic heater to add a little warmth at night...Canada is cold this time of year...Plastic attracts the cold and we needed all the help we could get...
