Kia tere te Karohirohi

May the calm be widespread
May the sea glisten like the greenstone
And may the glimmer of summer dance across your pathways

Decision made

This morning, my car turned into the garden center all on it's own. This seems to happen on a regular basis during gardening season. *chuckle*
Today I was going in to look for rhubarb plants, but instead, came home with two very nice blueberry bushes. For quite some time I had been considering growing a couple of blueberry bushes, as I am not too excited by the cost of fresh or frozen berries and I do love these berries on cereal, as jam or in a pie.
The little bit of research I had done on blueberry plants told me they were large bushes and would not be suitable for my 20x20 foot garden patch, so I had almost given up on the idea of growing my own berries.
Eric who is a friend, and also happens to be a very knowledgeable employee of the garden center, happened to walk by when I was looking at rhubarb plants. We had a discussion about rhubarb, then I mentioned how much I would like to have blueberries but the bushes were too large. I was ecstatic to learn there are dwarf varieties of blueberries and arrived home with the two varieties Eric suggested for my plot.

I chose one plant to bear fruit throughout the summer, and the other mid to late season.

The fall color of this plant will be a nice addition to the garden.

Now I have my two blueberry bushes, fertilizer, and instructions on the planting and after care, I am anxious to get outside tomorrow, to plant the blueberry bushes.
Of course, you know, I will have to make another trip to the garden center, for the rhubarb I forgot in my excitement over finding the blueberry bushes.

You'll love having blueberries! My Mom has the Sunshine Blue and gets a surprising amount of fruit on it. I like blueberry bushes for their fall color as well as the fruit. Have fun planting them!

I don't know if blueberries will grow in Nebraska. I don't think they do, because of the wrong acidity. I am excited for you. Blueberries are so good for you, that anyone who can grow them should!

My rhubarb is ready to pick around the time I am busy trying to get things planted and lettuce picked. I rarely get it picked and used. Each year I say I'm going to do better next year.

Have fun letting that car take you to the garden centers!

Hi. I'm new to your blog. Noticed that you live in western Washington. I live in western Oregon--Albany to be exact.

I have two 'Sunshine Blue' blueberries growing in pots. The foliage is greenish blue in summer then turns maroon in winter. The buds and flowers are pink. Basically this plant has it all--ornamental and edible. The important thing with blueberries is to not let the soil dry out. A few weeks ago I couldn't resist. I bought a blueberry variety called 'Misty.' I have high hopes for it. Good luck with your new treasures.

I'm starting blueberries for the first time this year, too. My little guy eats so many, and as you pointed out they aren't cheap! I see your in WA, it will be fun to see your garden progress. Happy gardening!

Okay, you know I am jealous of your plants peaking out of the earth already!! Montana seems to still think it's winter as we have another 2 inches of snow since Friday! Your blue berries sound yummy! It will be fun to see how the bushes do over there...awesome I suspect with the moisture you get. Have fun in your garden.

I started growing blueberries in my backyard two years ago. It is only a standard lot of (33'X122'). Now I have 22 bushes of 15 varieties, but no Sunshine Blue. Chandler is great!

Hey, great to see another Puget Sound gardener here! We have a group, in case you'd like to take the ferry over sometime and join in - next meeting is 3/22 in Bellevue. If you want more details, visit Petunia's Garden blog. I just cleared space for two blueberry bushes too, including (I hope) Sunshine! You're ahead of me, I don't have the plants yet...
